On Saturday, May 17, Saratoga Central Catholic School honored Brian Cogan, a 1966 graduate of St. Peter’s Academy (now SCC), by retiring his jersey number 13 in a ceremony at East Side Rec Park. In recognition of his remarkable life and service, Saratoga Springs Mayor John Safford officially proclaimed the day as “Brian Cogan Day.”

Cogan was a standout three-sport athlete at St. Peter’s, excelling in football, basketball, and especially baseball. He threw two no-hitters during his high school career, including a record-setting 22-strikeout game. After graduation, Cogan was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam as a squad leader with the American Division. He was honorably discharged and received both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for bravery.

Upon returning home, Cogan resumed his baseball career and was signed by the New York Yankees in 1969. He pitched for their Oneonta affiliate, helping the team win the NY-Penn League title. Cogan is just the second player in SCC baseball history to have his number retired, joining former MLB pitcher Tim Stauffer ’00. He has been a member of the SPA/SCC Hall of Fame since 2003 and will be inducted into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame later this year.

Now 77, Cogan resides in Saratoga Springs with his wife Betsy. Together, they have raised four children and continue to support the school and local community.
