Saratoga Central Catholic Launches IRS-Certified VITA Program for 2026 Tax Season

Saratoga Central Catholic School (grades 6–12) has officially launched its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program for the 2026 tax season, empowering 23 IRS-certified juniors and seniors to complete free federal and state tax returns for members of the local community.

Under the leadership of Business Instructor George Hannah, students have trained throughout the school year in preparation for tax season. After completing required coursework and passing IRS certification exams, each student is now qualified to prepare federal and state returns through the VITA program.

Saratoga Central Catholic is one of just 121 schools nationwide, and one of only 25 in New York State, participating in this IRS-sponsored initiative.

Learning by Doing

The program has already hosted several successful tax preparation sessions, with appointments continuing weekly through early April. Community members sit down with student tax associates who guide them through the preparation process under professional supervision.

This experience goes far beyond the classroom.

Rather than simply studying financial and business concepts in theory, students apply what they’ve learned in a real-world setting — interacting with clients, handling documentation, and preparing official tax returns. The result is meaningful, resume-building experience before college.

Preparing for What’s Next

The Class of 2026, currently participating in the program, has already earned more than $9 million in academic scholarships among its 32 graduates. As the Class of 2027 looks ahead to the college application process, opportunities like VITA further distinguish Saratoga Central Catholic students.

Community members interested in scheduling a free tax preparation appointment may register here.

Local media are also invited to attend an upcoming tax service session to see the program in action. View the press release below for additional details and media contact information.
