The seventh grade is reading a book called Out of My Mind, by Sharon Draper in Mrs. Crowther's ELA class.
The narrator has cerebral palsy, is bound to a wheelchair, and cannot communicate verbally. In order to better understand what the narrator is going through and exercise empathy, students made communication boards and went through the entire school day without talking, and only using the boards to communicate with their teachers and each other.
