On Saturday, May 17, seven SCC students participated in the NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) Solo Competition at the Queensbury High School Festival. NYSSMA is a professional organization that evaluates student musicians across New York State.
Our students performed a variety of solos, including vocal, clarinet, trumpet, and saxophone pieces. Each selection was chosen from the designated NYSSMA repertoire, which ranges from Levels I–VI, and included requirements such as playing scales and performing a sight-reading piece. An adjudicator scored and provided feedback on each student’s performance based on NYSSMA’s established guidelines.
Congratulations to Emma Gilchrist (voice), Emilia Mastri (voice), Maggie Durfee (clarinet), Jake Durfee (trumpet), and Gianluca Russo (saxophone). Each student earned excellent scores, with most receiving marks in the high 90s.
A special thank you to Kevin Carey of Paul Effman Music for accompanying each vocal student.
